About Polygon
Polygon (formerly Matic Network) was founded in 2017 by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, and Anurag Arjun as an Ethereum scaling solution. The project rebranded to Polygon in February 2021, broadening its vision from a single sidechain to a multi-chain ecosystem. Polygon PoS — the flagship chain — provides an EVM-compatible environment with dramatically lower fees than Ethereum mainnet, making it one of the most accessible entry points into DeFi.
USDT transfers on Polygon are among the cheapest in the industry, often costing less than $0.001. The network achieves this through its Proof of Stake sidechain architecture that periodically checkpoints to Ethereum for security. Block times of roughly 2 seconds mean transactions confirm almost instantly. Because Polygon is fully EVM-compatible, users can connect with the same wallets (MetaMask, etc.) and tools they already use on Ethereum.
In 2024, the native token was migrated from MATIC to POL as part of Polygon 2.0 — a roadmap to transform the network into a unified multi-chain system powered by zero-knowledge proofs. POL serves as the staking and gas token across the Polygon ecosystem. Despite the rebrand, the network remains backward-compatible and continues to be one of the most widely supported chains on exchanges and bridges.
Polygon's combination of near-zero fees, Ethereum compatibility, and broad adoption makes it an excellent choice for users who need to transfer USDT frequently without worrying about transaction costs. Major protocols like Aave, Uniswap, and Curve all maintain Polygon deployments.
